Next week a few cycling photographs will be on show at the Parzelle 403 space in Basel. A wheatpaste race will also take place in which cyclists can race around Basel hunting for specific wheat pasted artwork, the first one back wins stuff ;)

Feast your eyes on this outstanding performance of skill on a track bike. Patrick Seabase is the only cyclist in the world I know of who is climbing and bombing mountains in this fashion. Check his new website HERE and this great edit from a recent trip to the Italian alps, cycling the famous Stelvio pass. In early October the Swiss art and culture magazine AMATEUR will have an exclusive feature on Seabase and his Stelvio ride, together with some photographs of the action from my good self.

This Summer has been a lot of fun, I have had the pleasure of joining Swiss cyclist Patrick Seabase on a few mountain rides, documenting what I feel are some truly amazing cycling achievements. I've witnessed sheer determination and guts as he's climbed and then descended alpine passes that would test professional and experienced road cyclists. Averaging speeds of 30-35km per hour over 120 km rides with descents at speeds of 75-80 km per hour, all being done on his own prototype carbon track bike frame with a fixed gear (49/17) ratio. If that was not challenging enough for this inadvertent icon he also rides brake-less. Much more on this will be revealed in Issue 7 of Amateur magazine due out early October, until then here are some photos taken during a recent ride over the famous Grimsel pass.

Swiss summer snaps

As a resident living in the Swiss capitol of Bern it allows for very easy access to some of the most stunning scenery the world has to offer. Roughly about an hour away by train is a quaint mountain village named Kandersteg. Here you can take a 10 mins cable car ride up to the very top of the mountain range and embark on a walk to a magnificent turquoise blue lake named oschinenasee. Below are some ever so slightly PS tweaked, 1960's postcard inspired photographs taken whilst on one of those visits.

Since the last blog post it's been nonstop fun, which of course is always good. However, no time for blog posts. Finally it's summer in Switzerland so i'm spending most days out riding the bike and enjoying the countryside.

In January 2006 Felice Limosani invited me to Florence, Italy for Pitti Uomo. I was asked to paint, draw and scribble on the interior of the famous fashion boutique LUISA VIA ROMA . The event was called Final Touch and combined my interior artwork, a video installation from Felice Limosani and some live artwork by Gary Baseman. I had a great time but always thought I'd lost the pictures I took until today when an old camera re-appeared. Here are some of the better quality pictures taken during my stay.

Using the simplest and cleanest form of transport, a Track bike. Five cyclist’s meet at the Sydney Opera House in Australia. They journey into extreme terrain during dangerous summer conditions. Riding 1200km of road in ten days to the city of Melbourne. Will we all make it?

A few weeks ago myself and a number of other artist from Switzerland were invited to paint at a disused supermarket in Bern. I chose a nice corner of the space but had no idea what to paint, I ended up creating the piece below. Sometimes it is worth all the effort to get up early in the morning even if you do feel like shit and have the worst man flu you have ever had. I snapped these pictures of the sunrise at the weekend whilst staying with some friends 2880 meters up in the Swiss-Italian Alps at the refuge Guglielmina. So glad I made it out of bed.

Artistic inspiration 'POP'

Part of the artistic inspiration for my current series of POP artwork are these two pictures taken of a Graffiti wall in Bristol, UK.

Hanging out with some friends at this spot I observed some bored kids repeatedly smashing a hammer against the painted wall causing the paint to break away and fall to the floor. Once the kids had tired and ran off I walked over to the wall to see the damage they had done and in doing so discovered chunks of layered colour, paint on paint 'POP' that had built up from the many times that the wall had been covered. Thoughts and discussion then turned to the history and feelings that had been captured within these layers, mirroring a similarity to trees and their growth rings, in that each layer told and held a story about it’s life. Parallel to the trees growing rings, the paint from the wall and within the ‘POP’ paintings captures the emotion and energy of the artist and environment.

Well... they lovingly took time out of their busy creative schedule to customize a 8" Smurf toy into a wicked 'Zombie Smurf' for my birthday. The images were placed into mini gilt frames 3cm by 5cm and used as part of a display for a Brazilian themed party. The Captomaniac mask

The Cutterskink 'Captomaniac' mask is on it's way to Jason Atomic and Garry Vanderhorne who are presenting a three day festival of events in London, based around the mystique of the mask. Some great artists from all over the globe have submitted work, You can find out more information by taking the jump here.

Captomaniac, this anti/Byronic type of hero travels all over the planet transforming the socially regarded, disused and ugly into his own definition of beauty. Wearing a mask that resembles Andy Warhol (giving a nod to the 15 minutes of fame for everyone) and only venturing outside when it is dark (for fear of discovery and ridicule) the city streets become a pleasure playground... neigh, an orgy of possibilities for his very toxic paint infested creative brain. Carrying a rucksack full of cigarettes, spray paint and caps twice a week and maybe at the weekend (If he can be arsed and X factor is not on TV) Captomaniac sets out to selfishly indulge in his self proclaimed heroic duties. Much like a dog pissing up a lamp post, moving from one street to the next, he will be sniffing out that doorway, that perfectly smooth wall or just the right spot to leave his own and very personal Captomaniac mark.

On June 6th 2009 Art Clash history will be made as the fourth event will take place at the perfect venue inside the industrial FREITAG headquartes Zürich, Switzerland.

Art Clash is a live art-tournament hailing from the Swiss art-collective "Die Seiner."

Born In 2005, taking the concept of traditional Reggae-Clash events and using Art instead, It provides a platform for Artists, Illustrators and Designers to express themselves in front of a live audience showing off skills, techniques and how ideas of creation are realized.

10 teams with two artists per team have been invited from all around Europe to compete against each other over 3 rounds, painting and drawing on different objects. „Brosmind“ from Spain, „Permanent Unit“ from Austria, "40HK" from UK or Swiss „Schwarzmaler“ to name a few. After every round judges will vote on the best creations selecting teams to go through into the next round, ultimately leaving 3 teams battling it out in the final to become the ART CLASH champions for 2009.

Other tasty treats on the day include a public drawing-wall, pop-up shop, chill-out area and a bar serving the finest beverages and food available. So come on! Everybody is welcome to join the fun, this is one experience that you do not want to miss.

A YEAR OF THE STUDIO

A year has passed by since the doors of Papiermuhle Studio first opened and time has moved so quickly, working on various illustration projects, events and artwork. So i took time out yesterday for a moment of reflection on what magic had been achieved. In doing so i thought about what keeps me and all of us going as we move through our daily life. For me the answer is not money or fame, it's just one beautiful thing... Love. A fine art printer since 1979 working alongside the Masterprinter Ernest deSoto in San Francisco, he has collaborated with the likes of José Luis Cuevas, Alejandro Colunga, and Gustavo Rivera. Shout out to Tom for sharing his skills and helping with the print techniques.

I took some pics on a bike ride in a forest i found at the bottom of the road. it has some really great tracks winding through wicked vegetation and big pine trees, loads to see.

Had an Invite to the NIKOLAUS LIST exhibition at the gallery KRETHLOW in Bern.
I really liked his paintings, the style of the trees with some great colours mixed together.

Hey, naked sunbathers watch out, LOOK UP, LOOKOUT!!!
This dude i know Chris has a wicked project going on. Attaching a digital camera under this extremely lightweight, hand built, remote controlled plane, he is able to take aerial photos of... well, whatever you want. Here he is on his way out for a test flight.

Barcelona is a great place to party and have some fun even if it's very hot, which it is at the moment...so what am i doing here?
well, lending a helping hand to the Monorex and Reebok peeps at the b n b clothing show...all good fun.
I meet mr fowler again, a really nice fella full of niceness and monster stuff.

50 mins north of Bern on the chu chu train is Basel, so pad and I went to see what all the fuss was about.

I took a camera with me on the bike ride home the other day and snapped my route.
It goes along the banks of the river Aare then past Bern train station.
A very pleasant ride home indeed.
